Fine Arts Director
After receiving a degree in Communication Arts from Bryan College, Michael spent two years as an actor/bookkeeper for the Bijou Theater in downtown Knoxville. In March of 2004, he jumped at the chance to join the family legacy of educating at Berean Christian School and began the next fall as the high school’s history and drama teacher. Michael continued his education and achieved his M.A.T. in Secondary Education through Liberty University in 2020. Michael and his wife Kimberly have two children, Olivia and Ryker.
Fine Arts Administrative Assistant
Kim earned her BA in Mass Communications/Public Relations from Carson Newman University and her graduate work from Life University in Positive Psychology with an emphasis in Nature Based Coaching. After serving as a white-water rafting guide and seasonal park ranger for the state of Tennessee, Kim worked in private practice as a nature-based crisis and trauma coach before joining the Fine Arts Department at Berean. When not playing outside with her husband Michael and their two children Ryker and Olivia, she serves as the children's pastor at Old North Abbey.
MS|HS Musical Theatre • Honor Choir Director
Beth earned her degree in Music and Business Administration from Carson-Newman University. She began composing in college and is a published composer with four piano books in print. She began her teaching career at West Valley Middle School in 2005. She launched Smith Music Studios in 2006 and instructed over 100 students over ten years including many concerts and productions. Beth came to Berean in 2015 to partner in growing the Fine Arts program. She has directed ten Broadway musicals and served as technical director on many more. She stepped into website design and social media manager for Berean in 2020. Beth Smith Creative launched in 2022 providing piano and vocal coaching, graphic design, and virtual assistant services.
Pre-K - 6th Grade Music
Amy Churchwell is a graduate of Carson Newman University with a degree in Music Education. She and her husband Josh have two children, Levi and Zoe, attending Berean Elementary. After teaching in public schools for the past 14 years, God opened a door for her to come to Berean. She is most excited about getting to know the students and families, and seeing what the Lord has in store for the future. Her favorite verse is 1 John 3:18 “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth”.
Rachel graduated in 2008 from the University of Tennessee with a BA in Theatre. For the past decade she has worked locally to provide caring, Christ centered performance and education to the Knoxville community through and alongside The WordPlayers, a local Christian Theatre Company. She is excited to see what the Lord has in store for the Arts at Berean and thankful to be a part of such a rich heritage of young artists and educators. Outside and off of the stage, Rachel enjoys spending time with her Church family, hiking, camping, anything on the water and general tomfoolery with her boys, Bode and River. Mostly she loves doing all these many things with her husband Ethan, who shares similar interests.
K - 12 Art
Mrs. Alexander has been nurturing student’s creative pursuits at Berean since 2010. Her desire is for them to have a better understanding of their Creator through their daily explorations in Art. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Newcomb College of Tulane University. Mrs. Alexander and her husband Mark have four children. Three are graduate “lifers” of BCS, with the youngest following suit in May 2022. In her “spare” time, she enjoys travel, museums, baking, pottery and exploring new media.
Digital Design | Marketing Director
Tab graduated in 1986 with a BFA from the University of Tennessee majoring in Graphic Design. He obtained the 2016 Standard Secondary Teacher Certification Association Christian Schools International Postgraduate studies: Walden University and Fresno University. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in Graphic Design he worked in that field for ten years until God placed on his heart to pursue a full-time youth ministry position at Berean Bible Church, which he held for fifteen years. He has taught bible and history at BCS since 2006, and serves as Marketing Director.
